The view from Kaye's desk…
Ton is in Europe right now, on a well-earned break after a decade of
service to the poor of Delhi, so I greet you in his place. I have just
turned off my ceiling fan for the first time in 5 months, a sure sign
that the notorious heat of Delhi's summer is behind us. The past summer
months have seen many challenges: a record number of patients and the
staff stretching to care for them, a peaceful sadness as we say goodbye
to patients whose earthly journey is ending. But each challenge is
tempered by many moments of intense joy and beauty: dying people are
picked up from the roadsides, the hungry are fed, wisdom and truth are
shared, a spirit of community pervades.
Our land situation continues to be threatened. The Indian
Government is modernizing Delhi's suburbs and restructuring entire
zones for their city development plans. We are awaiting a Delhi High
Court decision about the "Master Plan for Delhi" in November. The court
decision will be a key factor in determining the schedule and scope of
projects like ours. In the meantime, our fundraising efforts for a new
Ashram have been partially successful and are ongoing. Thank you
to those who have contributed toward this project and for the many
faithful donors who support our continuing work among the destitute of
Delhi.
I leave you with the thoughts and impressions of a visitor named Mike about his first days at Sewa Ashram…
